The Queensland Resources Council says this year's flood is the worst natural disaster the coal industry has ever had to cope with.Eighty per cent of coal mines have been affected by excess water, and rail lines that are used to transport coal to port have also been put out of action.Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche says the focus is now developing ways for coal mines to deal with extreme weather.
But at this stage, he says, the industry is far from back on track.
"This has been a case of a very early, above average wet season. The fact that above average rainfall started as early as August in unprecedented," he said.
"And, of course, the La Nina event is predicted to be with us through until perhaps late April, so we have to gear up for further disruption."
